What it is

Asset finance allows a business to acquire essential equipment while spreading the cost over an agreed term, rather than committing significant capital upfront. It can be used across plant, machinery, vehicles, technology and other business-critical assets.

The structure will depend on the asset and the objective. Hire purchase can provide a route to ownership, while leasing can offer greater flexibility where outright ownership is not required. Because the asset itself typically forms part of the lender's security, funding can often be structured around both the business and the value of the equipment.

Asset finance can also release capital from equipment a business already owns. Sale and HP back, for example, can unlock cash tied up in existing assets while allowing the business to continue using them. Different lenders have different appetites for hard and soft assets, new and used equipment, and specialist machinery, so the right structure and lender matter. Tax treatment and capital allowances should be discussed with your accountant.

Who it suits
  • You need to invest in plant, machinery, vehicles or equipment while preserving capital for the wider business.
  • You own business assets outright and want to release some of the capital tied up in them.
  • You are acquiring specialist, used or auction equipment that may fall outside traditional bank lending criteria.
  • You want the funding term structured around the useful working life of the asset.
